Stripe fee basics for founders

The common US online card rate is 2.9% + $0.30. That is the default behind this stripe fee calculator. In-person, ACH, international cards, Billing, Tax, Radar for Fraud Teams, and Connect each add their own lines. Start with the base card rate when you are still validating a price point.

Worked example

A $79 charge costs about $2.59 in fees under 2.9% + $0.30, leaving roughly $76.41 before refunds and chargebacks.

FAQ

Pass fees to customers? Laws and card network rules vary. Many products bake fees into the list price instead of a checkout surcharge.

Subscriptions? Billing can add 0.5% or more on top of card processing for some products. Check your Stripe dashboard.

Blended versus interchange plus

Most early startups stay on a blended 2.9% + $0.30 style rate. Higher volume accounts may negotiate interchange plus pricing. This calculator intentionally stays on the public blended default so founders do not underprice while still on startup economics. If your Stripe representative quotes a different schedule, override the mental model and recompute nets in a spreadsheet using the same charge amounts.

International cards, currency conversion, and authentications can push the effective rate above 2.9%. If more than a fifth of your volume is cross-border, add a buffer when setting list prices. Radar and Billing add product fees that are easy to miss during a launch week.

Subscriptions, trials, and failed payments

Trials that convert still pay processing on the first live invoice. Failed renewals may retry and generate multiple authorization attempts. Smart Retry can improve recovery but does not erase the base processing fee on successful charges. Model annual plans not only for cash flow but also for fewer failed monthly cycles.

Marketplace and platform sellers on Connect

Stripe Connect introduces application fees you define plus Stripe's processing. This page does not model Connect. If you take a platform cut, compute your application fee and the Stripe charge separately so both sides of the marketplace understand net payouts.

Using the calculator in packaging decisions

Round price points like $49 and $99 feel clean but can hide fee drag. Sometimes $52 or $103 better absorb the fixed $0.30 while staying marketable. Run three candidate prices through the form and pick based on net, not vanity.

Probe notes

Stripe intent here is founder pricing hygiene, not a full billing suite. The calculator answers the first question on a pricing page redesign: what do we keep after cards. Longer essays about Connect or Tax belong in later iterations if search data supports them.

Cross-links back to marketplace calculators help multi-channel sellers compare apples to oranges without opening five unrelated tools.

Card brand mix and effective rate

American Express and some international brands can settle above the starter blended rate. If your dashboard shows an effective rate near 3.2% after a month of traffic, re-run this calculator with a mental premium or adjust list prices. Do not wait for annual planning to notice the gap. Weekly dashboard glances beat quarterly surprises.

Refunds return the percentage in many cases but behavior around the fixed fee can differ. Chargebacks add separate costs. Build a small buffer into contribution margin for those events instead of treating the calculator net as locked profit.
